Stange and New

I know my blog is kind of all over the place, but I am and all over the place kin of girl. There are just so many thoughts zapping in and out of my head that its hard to concentrate and write about one single issue. So now I am back with this love thing. Love is just love, there is no explanation it just a necessity.

I have this new love, that is so new is strange. Ive never felt it before, never experienced anything like it. All i know is that strange and new is not always a bad thing. It may even be better then anything you will ever know.

Strange and new can be used to describe lots of things in life the first time you drank a beer the first time your rode a bike the first time you made love and the first time you fell in love. Strange and new can only be used once in most cases because to use the phrase twice in a situation would make that situation neither strange nor new. Heres where the exception comes into play the L word as is does with everything thing it comes in contact with love changes the rules.

Think about it if you knew everything about a video game you would finish it then its on to the next. Can you imagine a world with no stable love, just a loveless society of serial daters staying up all night all night playing the game its a challenge until the basic rule and strategy of the game is digested then once its is the thrill is gone the newness is over and its then on the next.the same thing applies to books, hobbies, and work Love is truly the only renewable resource, the one that I after you think you have mastered every aspect of it throws a strange curve ball and becomes new all over again. We would like to believe that after any substantial time in a relationship we know all we want or care to know about our significant other, sorry all we really know is that we dont know squat,we know is that we like each other because we laugh or get along, we can finish a sentence, my friends like her/him and maybe we share a common interest but beyond that what do we really know.

I tried to put my finger on what makes love so different. Why does Love when its real Love seem so strange and new its simple the human factor, Its amazing for people to be in love for 50 sometimes 60 years when theres so much temptation and newness floating around, the upgraded model always looks better than the original right?, I guess its what they say we want what we want and strange and new or the spice of life is the key to endurance.

Katrina VS. The Fires

Katrina was among one of the biggest disasters in the U.S. However, people were left to die and suffer without the help of our government. A government, which is supposed to serve as a shield during the worst situations. Where were they when Katrina ferociously struck New Orleans and claimed the lives of so many people? Katrina left a permanent scar New Orleans and its people.
FEMA cannot claim that they did not know about it, because numerous reports state the there were signs, unmistakable signs.
With all the respect to those who lost their homes in the California fires but I cant help but wonder what happened during Katrina that did happen in California? How come FEMA responded so quickly and in such a different manner to the situation in California? From day spas to hotel rooms and even messages in the stadium, fire victims did not have to endure half of the atrocities that Katrina victims faced. The picture on the very to is of Katrina victims in the superdome, no beds, no blankets. The image bellow is of the Stadium which the fire victims used for shelter.
So what did happen? Was an act of racism or plain disregard for those who do not have the economic resources?
I am not trying to play the race card, but it is impossible not to think this way. Also, I am not saying there was only, wrong doing to the African American community, because there were a lot white families who were affected by the disaster. However, most of the people who were affected by this were those in the African American community who are considered of low socio-economic standing.
Though there are many accounts by California residents that FEMA’s response was not the greatest and that it could’ve been better, the reality is that if they were to truly look back and see the kind of situation in which many of the Katrina victims had to go through there will be no complaining.
They weren’t stuck in a Superdome where little babies slept next to convicts armed with weapons. These people were forced to live amongst waste, with no food and water for days. If this does not look like an act of negligence, then what does?
I do not want to seem like an irrational, over sensitive minority, but when things like this occur it only makes you think how sad it is, that situations like these occur in a country like ours. Here we are in the middle of an unjust war, where billion and billions of our tax dollars are being spent and our government agencies cannot plan a decent rescue effort.

Plato does make sense..

Its funny how things that didn’t make sense before can come back to haunt you and finally that little light bulb lights up.
Well I signed up for this history of comm. art theory class and it turns out that communication theory really dates back to "back in the days." Our professor told us we were reading Phaedra’s. I didn’t know then, but I was actually going to be making a connection with one of the first philosophers of our times Mr. Socrates himself.
For those of you who know Socrates and his stories this one is a bit different then the ones I have encountered. Phaedrus deals with an encounter with Plato and the character named Phaedrus while they are discussing a speech made by a man named Lysias. In this speech Lysias tries to persuade a jury that being a “non-lover is better then a lover.” Right away I knew that I was not going to agree but to my surprise Lysias did make rational points.

” A non-lover cannot make being in love an excuse for the neglet of his own business, or take past effort into account, or complain of having fallen out with his relatives.
Lysias believes that someone who is not in love will not have to deal with forgetting about the life they used to live before they were in love or deal with acts of jealousy from relatives. I would say how brilliant? But reality is that we are humans and it will take miracle for something like this to happen with all of the relationships that we have. Do not become a love, however is it really possible to stay so disconnected from someone that emotions will not run wild and not even lust will exist?
Also, not wanting to become a love just shows how fear of the unknown can be become our number one enemy and our ally at the same time.

I am not a Superhero

I am not a superhero but at times I wish I were. My name is Diana Mia Marte, 20 year old college student from the Dominican Republic, but currently living in the soon to be Ex-capital of the world. Being a first (or maybe 2nd) generation immigrant in NYC is a book on its own. I don’t intend on having all the answers or saving the world but I will always try to ask question and push the envelope.

Being an "alien" affects everything I do. The way I walk, they way I dress, the way I eat, who I date, and who I mingle with and specifically who I have become in the past 12 years of living in the U.S. of A. Born to a Dark skin Dominican mother and a Light-skin Dominican father also makes me unique, lets face it I was mixed in with the best stuff on earth. Not only is it the perfect blend but also it allows me to be part of two worlds that were created by the ignorance of people.

Being a young adult there are things that I am becoming more aware of that I did not care a rat’s ass about when I was 12 and still playing with my miniature toy cars. Things like racism the one power that still prevails in America, love, and interracial dating. These ideas for some reason are very prominent in my everyday struggle to stay sane in a world of bombarded by war, and unreliable media and tabloid that apparently are becoming the media outlet for some people.

So, the focus hopefully, Love and the power of Race, which includes true love, the meaning of love, interracial love, the invisible white power, immigration and other topics that I am sure will arise once my brain and my finger tips connect.
